Birth photography may not be the first thing on your checklist when planning for a baby, but this is a huge investment into preserving memories for your family.
Jason and Jane weren’t 100% sure about this at first but knew that family was extremely important. You may think that perhaps these types of images may seem gory or revealing, but I promise you that these images are far from that.
We counted down the days until baby Nate’s due date. A natural birth was planned and Jane hoped not to require any drugs as she has a fear of needles. But as is life, Nate had different plans for mom. He decided he wanted to stay in just a little longer and 5 days past his eviction date, docs had to make the call. Since his heart rate was a tad bit irregular, plans kept changing for mom and what seemed like a normal morning for Jane and Jason, soon became a roller coaster ride of a day for them both.
I receive the call around 7 in the evening and headed straight for St Pauls. The plan was “within the next 2 hours” which really meant, get here now because baby is coming pretty well right away! Just as I arrived, Jane was being whisked down into the waiting room to be prepped for a C-Section or as the cool kids call it a #bellybirth. Docs prepped us all and soon, it was just Jason and I. Naturally, he was a little … ok maybe a lot … anxious but we paced around the waiting area together! Before we knew it, we were in there with the Docs cheering Jane on.
20 minutes later, baby Nate arrived and all of a sudden the feels in the room changed. I’ll be honest, nothing in life prepares you to see a fresh new human being enter the world and I’m sure some would look at this funny looking wrinkly monkey at first and wonder how on earth it is you all of a sudden have so much love for it.
I headed back to the hospital a couple days later to visit while grandma was there ensuring momma had good food to eat. Nate, being the trendy dude he is was already getting his tan on in the incubator.
Thanks to Raman @ Holistic Birth Doula for coming in to help out and being super rad during this process for mom and dad!
If birth is not quite for you, document the first hours of your child’s life whether at a hospital or in your home. Get images of skin to skin cuddles, feeding, cries, gurgles, diaper changes and all the little moments of baby and parenthood.
